Breaking Benjamin was formed in 1999, by Benjamin Burnley- lead singer and guitarist and Jeremy Hummel- drummer. The original members consisted of Aaron Fink- guitarist and Mark Klepaski-bassist. The first lineup released two albums in 2002 and 2004 namely 'Saturate' and 'We are not Alone'. After two studio albums, the drummer Hummel was replaced by Chad Szeliga.

The band went on to release two more studio albums, Phobia, 2006 and Dear Agony,2009. In early 2010, they entered a long hiatus due to the lead singer Burnley's recurring illness.

Amidst the hiatus, the band released a compilation album, Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin in 2011. However, since the album was unauthorized by Burnley, there were some disputes among the band members and brought about legal trouble. This resulted in the departure of Fink and Klepaski from the band. Chad Szeliga also announced his departure from the band stating creative differences as the issue.

In 2014, the band formed its second line up including Aaron Bruch as the bassist and backing vocalist, Keith Wallen as the guitarist and backing vocalist, Jasen Rauch as guitarist and Shaun Foist as the drummer along with Burnley. The band went on to release two studio albums ' Dark Before Dawn' in 2015 and 'Ember' in 2018.
