This Canadian musical comes with the book, lyrics, and music by David Hein and Irene Sankoff. The setting of Come From Away musical is based in the week that followed the 11th September attacks. The musical narrates the true tale of what happened after 38 planes were given orders to land abruptly in the small town of Gander in Newfoundland under Operation Yellow Ribbon.

The characters are all based on the true Gander citizens as well as some of the stranded passengers.

Works and Production

Come From Away had an insignificant start in 2009 by Michael Rubinoff, a theatre producer and a lawyer based in Toronto. With the collaboration of David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the whole idea was changed and transformed into a full musical. The book, the lyrics as well as the music were all produced by Hein and Sankoff in the years that followed, and they are all based on actual interviews with the residents.

The original production of the musical was done by the Seattle Repertory Theater and the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego from 2015. The musical earned more recognition as it arrived in Washington DC at the Ford's Theatre in 2016.

On March 12, 2017, Come From Away made its Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre selling over 150 million dollars.

Awards and Nominations

Come From Away has received four awards, which includes Helen Hayes Awards under Outstanding Production of Musical.

It has been nominated seven times at the 71st Tony Awards in 2017, under the category of Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Jenn Colella, and finally winning for Best Direction of a Musical for Christopher Ashley.

When it arrived in London, Come From Away won four Laurence Olivier Awards out of nine nominations in London, which includes Best New Musical. You may like other musicals Jersey Boys or Cats.
