What is Hadestown?
Hadestown is a musical with the book, lyrics, and music by Anaïs Mitchell. The musical's original version had its premiere in 2006 in Barre, Vermont. In the same year, there was another production in Vergennes, as well as a 2007 tour between Massachusetts and Vermont. In 2012, Anaïs Mitchell came into contact with director Rachel Chavkin which led to a collaboration on revising the stage production of Hadestown, adding more speech and music. The reworked version of the musical under the direction of Chavkin made its Off-Broadway premiere on May 6, 2016, at New York Theatre Workshop, which continued till July 31. After the London and Edmonton productions, the musical made its Broadway premiere in March 2019. The Broadway production received worldwide recognition and claimed several awards and nominations.
