Widespread Panic had its origin in Athens, Georgia, United States and formed in 1986. The band finds its influence from Southern rock, jazz fusion, progressive rock, hard rock, blues-rock, and funk genres. The current line-up for the band includes John Bell on guitars and vocals, Dave Schools on bass, Duane Trucks on drums, Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz on percussions, John “JoJo” Hermann on keyboards, and Jimmy Herring as the lead guitarist.
The band released their first album Space Wrangler on February 4, 1988. The album was recorded at John Keane’s studio and included singles such as “Chilly Water,” “Coconut,” “Driving Song,” and “Travelin’ Light,” among others.
In 1991, Widespread Panic signed a deal with Capricorn Records and released their second self-titled album. They also featured in the Billy Bob directed movie Widespread Panic: Live from the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. In 1992, Widespread Panic joined hands with the famous H.O.R.D.E. tour along with Phish, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and the Blues Traveler.
George McConnell replaced Michael Houser as the band’s new lead guitarist owing to the bad health of Houser. Houser suffered from pancreatic cancer and died on August 10, 2002. After McConnell joined as the lead guitarist, Widespread Panic released their studio album Ball.
