Melissa Lou Etheridge was born on May 29, 1961, in Leavenworth, Kansas, United States. Her music is based on several rock genres, including heartland rock, roots rock, folk-rock, blues rock, and country-rock. She is a talented singer as well as a versatile musician with expertise in musical instruments such as guitars, piano, harmonica, mandolin, and drums.

Melissa released her debut self titled album, Melissa Etheridge in 1988, which became an underground hit. The album got featured on Billboard 200 at number 22. The lead single from this album, “Bring Me Some Water” paved the way for her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female.

The Grammy Award couldn’t evade her long as she bagged one for her hit single “Ain’t It Heavy” in 1993, which was from her third album, Never Enough. Melissa’s second Grammy Award came after she released her fourth studio album, Yes I Am. Two tracks from the album “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One” both featured in the top 30 in the US charts.

After fighting for a year with breast cancer, she took the stage for the 2005 Grammy Awards performing the song “Piece of My Heart”, which was a tribute to Janis Joplin. She was bald during the performance owing to chemotherapy, which was lauded by many including India Aria Simpson, who released a song “I Am Not My Hair” about Melissa.
